As parents sending our children
out into the world to face their own trials and tribulations, we want deeply for them to succeed. We try to prepare them through involvement in many different interactive activities to help them socialize effectively. For some children, sports can be a very positive outlet for building strong relationships, developing focus and drive and overcoming struggles. Positive thinking has been used to improve a competitive athlete’s skill level. If you have a child who excels in sports, but wants to improve his game physically and mentally, positive thought and self-talk are effective ways to achieve those goals.
Proven Methods
The power of positive thinking has been used effectively for years by trainers and athletes to improve the overall game of professional athletes. The same process can be used to help your child overcome barriers and expand their abilities both mentally and physically. The concept is fairly simple; the implementation, however, takes focus and work on a daily basis.
How It Works
Positive thoughts can be fed directly to the mind to help improve concentration, focus, stamina, strength and endurance. It’s best to use the voice of the child and have them either read positive affirmations out loud or record them and listen to them. These positive affirmations, or self-suggestions, should be in the present. When your child tells himself, that he is strong and driven in the present tense, a mental image develops in the mind, as opposed to saying I will be strong and driven, which can be some inexact time in the future. Keep in mind that negative thoughts are more apt to come to the forefront of a person’s mind than the positive ones. It’s a constant battle to ward off those negative thoughts and replace them with positive redirection statements. For example, if your child says he doesn’t think he can do something, make sure to point out the reasons he can. Teach this to your child, too, so he will become more aware of the negative energy that creeps in all day every day.
Skills for Life
Improving your child’s athletic ability will give him confidence that will stay with him for life. Not to mention, the abilities that your athlete are developing are life skills that he will use in other aspects of life. Focus, drive, determination, competition, strategy, these are all important in business and life. Teaching your child to be strong and to win foster a goal-setting mind. It is said that with positive thinking your focus becomes your reality. You become what you think. If this is true, then why not become the best athlete and person you can possibly be and teach this also to your children. As mentioned, we all want to give our children the very best chance to succeed in this life. Why not help them develop the skills they need through positive thought and teach them to feel confident and strong? Strong minds build strong bodies and stronger spirits.
