Dealing with OCD through Positive Affirmations

Many people today suffer, in some form or another, from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, otherwise known as OCD.Classified as an anxiety disorder, it is characterized by recurrent, negative or unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions.) Most people dealing with OCD find themselves performing rituals, like cleaning, washing their hands, counting or double-checking, to off-set their obsessive thought pattern. OCD effects the everyday aspects of a person’s life and in extreme cases can cause serious social dysfunction. Positive thinking and positive suggestions, also called affirmations, can help ease the stress caused by OCD.

What is OCD?

People with OCD have high anxiety, stress, phobias and rituals that interfere with their everyday functions. Most people deal with fewer, smaller rituals, like counting steps, checking and re-checking to make sure the oven is turned off and constant hand-washing, which interrupts the flow of their day in some way. Essentially, the brain gets stuck on a linear thought pattern and can’t break away from it. The causes for OCD are not clear, though it would appear that a lack of serotonin, a chemical used to transport messages from the front to the back of the brain, may be a strong factor. The most common treatment for anxiety disorders, like OCD, is medication and cognitive-behavior therapy. The underlying principle behind cognitive-behavior theory is that thoughts become reality. So, in essence, if a person changed their thought patterns, they could change their behavior. Positive thoughts implanted in the mind of the patient can affect these types of changes.

The Process

The human brain is a precision instrument. Directing positive messages to the subconscious mind, it is possible to affect changes in behavior patterns in a person suffering with OCD. The best way to accomplish this is during sleep. That’s the time your subconscious mind is completely in control of the brain and uninterrupted access is available. You should record affirmations, preferably in your own voice, and play them at night while you are sleeping. Your subconscious mind will take the message and accept it as fact. Once the subconscious mind believes your message, the rest of the mind will follow suit. Create messages like, I am calm. I am free of anxiety. I am stress-free. I am accepting. These positive messages will relieve your mind from the stress caused by the obsessive-compulsive behavior.

There is Help and Hope

OCD attacks a person’s daily routines and interrupts their life flow. Getting stuck in a moment and unable to move forward until a ritual task is completed is a type of mental prison. But there is hope and there is help for people struggling with this illness. Giving positive messages to your mind will help to alleviate some of the obsessions that cause the behavior patterns. When used correctly, positive thought affirmations can undo the maladaptive behavior and get the mind back onthe right track.
